Steering Autonomous Vehicles Toward Equity
This report, developed by the Urban Institute and funded by Cruise, examines the potential for ridehail autonomous vehicles to fill gaps in transportation access using case studies of cities and autonomous vehicle (AV) equity. The report recommends that AV ride-hail companies and public regulators attempt to ensure that “their data and algorithms are not biased toward providing services in neighborhoods with higher incomes and higher shares of people who are white” and that “ride-hailed AV services are offered at low fares affordable to people with low and moderate incomes or integrate service with public transit options to limit costs as much as possible.”
