Micromobility: A Travel Mode Innovation
“Micromobility: A Travel Mode Innovation” was published in the Spring 2021 edition of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) quarterly magazine, Public Roads. It highlights FWHA’s activities related to micro mobility deployment, including the creation of Mobility Innovation and Mobility on Demand working groups, which facilitate the coordination of current and future mobility research. FWHA has also worked with partners such as the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) to conduct outreach and develop information briefs. The article notes that FWHA is exploring new opportunities to support micromobility research, particularly related to safety, equity, resiliency, user behavior, and curbside management. Gloria M. Shepherd, the Associate Administrator for Planning, Environment, and Realty at FHWA is quoted saying that, “FHWA and USDOT are well positioned now to expand coordination and collaboration efforts with universities, the private sector, and other domestic and international stakeholders to monitor trends and evaluate facilities and design needs.”
